8 Excellent Instagram worthy bridges in Singapore.

Strolling along these brightly lit, instagram worthy bridges across the Singapore river at night while the cool night breeze gently brushes you is truly blissful.
Bridges in Singapore every Bridge Enthusiast / Pontist  must go visit. A Pontist is someone who is a historic bridge enthusiast who enjoys bridge photography or loves checking out every bridge in the city and makes an effort to know more about the history of how it was built , details on it’s construction or simply loves visiting bridges.
I am a historic bridge enthusiast myself. I visited these lovely bridges in Singapore and  couldn’t stop myself from writing this blog .
Mentioned below is a list of 8 beautifully exceptional bridges of Singapore that are a must visit:
1. Elgin Bridge: This is an arch bridge that was opened in 1929. It is 46m long and 25m wide. It’s a vehicular bridge that crosses over the Singapore river.

Elgin Bridge

History of Elgin Bridge:
• History has it that Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles, the Founder of Modern Singapore landed on Singapore and founded the colony in 1819.
• In order to link a town planned for the chinese community in the southern side of the river to the town planned for the malay community in the northern side of the river he issued an instruction for a bridges to be built across the Singapore river .
• A wooden footbridge was built which was called Thomson’s bridge.
• Well, this was later demolished in 1862 and replaced by an iron bridge, built by James Bruce, Eight Earl of Elgin and Viceroy of India which was then replacement by concrete bridge with cast iron lamps on both sides which is today’s Elgin Bridge.

2.Cavenagh Bridge: This is the only Suspension bridge in Singapore. This is the oldest bridge in Singapore that till date exists in its original form. This is currently a pedestrians bridge. This bridge was built in 1870.

3.Anderson Bridge: A beautiful Truss bridge which is currently used as a Vehicular bridge. It was constructed in 1910.

  • An intimidating fact that I came across while reading about the bridges is that during Japanese Occupation of Singapore( 1942-1945)the severed heads of criminals were hung on the Anderson bridge as a warning thereby, discouraging citizens from breaking the law.

Glad I didn’t know about this fact when I went to visit the Bridge .This might have given it a haunted bridge effect otherwise.

4.Helix Bridge: This is my favourite pedestrian bridge in Singapore. It is built in the shape of DNA hence the name Helix. Be it day or night , this bridge maintains it’s unique beauty .
Previously, it was called as the Double Helix Bridge. Double Helix does sound  cool , I wonder why they changed it!

This pedestrian bridge links Marina Centre to Marina South and is located in Marina Bay area. It was officially opened for public use in 2010.
5.Esplanade bridge:
Well, this is a 261m long road bridge with Merlion at its south end and Esplanade -Theatres on the Bay at it’s North. This is a low level concrete bridge that crosses Marina Bay. This bridge was opened in 1997.

6.Henderson Waves Bridge: As the name suggests the bridge is built mimicking the waves .The bridge is lit with LED light every night between 7pm to 2am giving it an exquisite beauty adding to the architectural beauty of the bridge.

7. Alkaff Bridge: This is the most colorful pedestrian bridge. It is constructed in the shape of a boat and history has it that the bridge was named so honoring a wealthy Arabian family living in Singapore during the 20th century called the Alkaffs.

8.Jubilee Bridge: This bridge is one the most recently built bridges in Singapore. It was built to celebrate the golden jubilee of Singapore in 2015.Photography lovers don’t forget to get your cameras since you’ll be able to click some amazing pictures of Singapore from these bridges especially from Jubilee bridge.

First of all I want to say great blog! I had a
quick question which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your head prior to writing.
I’ve had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out there.
I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15
minutes are usually wasted just trying to figure out how
to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Many thanks!

Hi! Thank you for your lovely comment. That’s a lovely question . To be frank I just started blogging since last year and I am absolutely loving it. I am not much of an expert in writing, I feel writing about something that truly inspires us definitely does the trick. Before you even notice the article is ready. That’s how it works for me. There are days where I do happen to stumble upon the condition called writer’s block, but those days I don’t force myself to write instead I try reading blogs of other bloggers. Something soon does strike me and I end up writing a new blog. Be patient and keep writing .You’ll soon see how it works. Happy Blogging!
