Maleyam: A beautiful homestay at Kadalundi, Kerala

This came as a surprise to us. Mom had selected this homestay and kept it a secret only to be revealed on the day of our arrival. Since it was a one day stay, we were under the impression the place was a hotel somewhere amidst the busy streets of Calicut (Kozhikode). When we arrived at the place it was beyond what we’d expected. A beautiful traditionally built home with a well maintained garden in a village named Kadalundi. There were plants everywhere, the home stood nestled amongst all the greenery, the garden plants and coconut trees and everything else that were part of nature.Â
The main highlight of the place was the backdrop of the Kadalundi river estuary formed due to the confluence of Kadalundi river with the Arabian Sea. We spent most of our time at that thatched roof shack made of bamboo, wood and coconut leaves. It had an amazing overview of the estuary and the islands nearby. Coconut trees are quintessential to Kerala and there were so many standing tall in and around the place.Â
When we first arrived we could see the tall legs of the shack and the riverbed due to low tides. We could see stretches of visible land here and there at a distance. By night time, due to high tide, the water had engulfed most visible landmass, covering even the tiny bit of riverbed one could see during the day. There were tiny crabs and shell fishes in the muddy riverbed, most were submerged in water again by night.

We had booked a boating trip early morning the next day. The boat taking us arrived a day earlier. It was docked beside the thatched shack where we sat writing and watching the sunset . The place looked so beautiful I remember telling Unni this could be a perfect place for destination wedding as well. Turns out the owner’s son had his engagement ceremony at this location. That’s lovely isn’t it?

Meet the Host:

Maleyam Homestay is run by a lovely couple named Praveen and Meera. The hospitality they showed us during our stay made it feel like we’d arrived at a family friend’s place. They have a friendly pet dog. She came running to meet us every time we walked past the entrance of the homestay.Â
Meet Kanji, their little pet dog who loves to pose for pictures.

We were served a sumptuous breakfast before our boating trip began the next day through stretches of dense mangrove forest. Everyone were ready and excited for the boat trip by 7 am. And so we set off for our little adventure in the boat by 7:30am.Â
This little piece of heaven is for everyone looking to have a relaxed staycation in Kerala. A unique experience to enjoy the serenity amidst the estuary, islands and the mangroves.
